Abstract

Navico studies the lives of male and female temple dependants (“oblates”) and chattel slaves in Babylonia during the long 6th century BCE. It reconstructs their action profiles and shows how their lives were shaped by the interplay between the asymmetric dependency linking them to their masters and the agency they exercised within the legal framework of the time. This took place amid profound economic changes. Texts and insights gleaned from these sources will be made accessible here in the NaBuCCo web app.
