Slave rental in combination with antichretic pledge.

The document records the conditions under which A’s slave will continue working for BA agreed to rent out (ana idī uzuzzu) his slave C to B (ina pāni) for a period of 15 months and against the payment of 6 shekels of silver. The slave has been at B’s disposal (ina pāni) for the last 23 days after his master had been paid (eṭēru N, Perf.) the agreed upon sum of 6 shekels for the slave’s wages.  A acknowledges his receipt (eṭēru) of the wages (idu). The slave will be fed by his master (A) (akālu nadānu) and clothed (muṣiptu katāmu D) by the person for whom he will be working (B). In case the slave steals (mimmu našû) and/or flees (halāqu), and B informs A about it (šapāru Š), the latter will compensate him (for the loss) (tašlimtu šalāmu). Another matter that is regulated in this document concerns A’s debt of 9 kor of barley to B, which he should pay off in Ayyār at the entrance to the harvest collection point. This debt was secured by the pledge of C and no creditor other than B can dispose (šalāṭu) of him to settle his claim. Names of 2 witnesses and the scribe:  Šamaš-šumu-ibni/Bēl-aplu-uṣur. Two short remarks, one at the end of the document, the other one on the upper edge, provide that there is a 20 shekel penalty for contract violation (nabalkattānu, lit. “the one who violates”) and that two spades are loaned (ina pāni) to A.

A = Ṣidqī-Yāw/Sillem; B = Šikin-Yāw; C = Puhulla, slave of A.
