Promissory note for barley.

B owes dates (6 kor c. 1080 liters) of good quality, to be delivered in the measure (mašīḫu) of A  at Yahud in  the 7th month, i.e. during the date harvest season. It may be assumed that B should deliver the dates to A although this is not explicitly said so in the document. The document is written on the 5th of the 6th month, about a month before the delivery date. The background of the debt is described in much detail. We learn that the indebted dates are the estimated income from impost (imittu) on fields (eqlu) that had been given to the Judean šušānû-s (šušānê Yahudaya) who are considered to be “of Across the River (ebir nāri)” for tax related matters; the fields and collection of their income were managed by A under C’s supervision (ša qātē C … ša qātē A). There is the beginning of a guarantee clause, which was eventually erased. Names of 4 witnesses (among them W1-3) and the scribe: Nidintu/Bēlšunu//Dābibi.  We encounter the same witnesses and scribe in CUSAS 28 20.

A= Iddināya/Šinqā, deputy appointed over the mares (šanû ša urâti); B= Azrīqam/Šamā-Yāw; C= Uštanu; W1 = Bēl-ušallim/Šinqā, probably a brother of A; W2 = Nargia/Adad-lamā; W3 = Aḫīqam/Rapā-Yāw.
