Archive description

This essentially single generation archive can be divided into two groups, one connected with Nabû-ušallim/Nabû-aplu-iddin (16 Dar-1 Xer) and his relatives, inter alia his father Nabû-aplu-iddin/Nabû-balāssu-iqbi, the other with Šullumāya/Gūzānu and his relations, inter alia his father Gūzānu/Balāssu (24 Dar-1 Xer). The subject matter of the group is very similar, and prosopographically, there are several points of contact. Waerzeggers suggest the two men may be identical, so the two groups are taken together. There are thirty (or slightly more) tablets (18 Dar-2 Xer). They are in Berlin (Ungnad’s group XIIIa), in Oxford (Bodleian Library), and in the British Museum. It contains one title deed for real estate.

Prebendary brewing is one main business interest and there are several contracts stipulating the delivery of beer. The file on the renting of storage space (bīt šutummi) may also belong here. The family owned orchards on the Harru-ša-Bīt-Damiqu, in Bīt-Zērāya and elsewhere. Nabû-ušallim also rented additional land. There is one harrānu business partnership in which Nabû-ušallim’s son Nabû-mušētiq-uddû was a partner. Finally, there are silver texts, mostly promissory notes, some regarding the purchase of cattle and an isolated text concerning an ilku payment by Šullumāya.
