Archive description

Bēl-ušallim//Lēˀēa is the chief protagonist of this business archive and appears most often as creditor in debt notes for silver. There are about forty-seven tablets dated to the period between 8 Šamaš-šumu-ukīn and 20 Kandalānu, found in two clay pots in a private house in the Merkes area, mostly debt notes. Some debts are secured by pledges, and one finds the usual variable interest rates (13.3-20 %) typical for seventh century archives. The economic background of these texts is the silver invested in a harrānu venture. It seems that the group does not contain any title deeds or other property documents.
